We know it can be tempting to accuse everyone you come in contact with in order to see how they react.
But the best detectives spend more time listening instead of talking.
Every conversation contains clues, and if you’re busy making dramatic accusations, you’ll probably miss the information that actually matters.
Sometimes the smallest detail mentioned in passing turns out to be the key to solving the entire case.
Watch relationships, not just motives
Most people focus entirely on motive. While that’s important, it’s rarely the whole story.
Pay attention to relationships between the suspects. Who trusts each other? Who seems nervous around someone else? Who suddenly changes their story after another character enters the room?
In many murder mystery experiences, the obvious motive is simply there to distract you.
One of our own mysteries appears to revolve around love and jealousy. In reality, the motive is financial and that completely changes who the real killer is.
Separate facts from theories
The number one mistake people make when they are attending one of our murder mystery experiences is coming up with some outlandish theory that they then demand we explain.
But, truth be told, just because you came up with an idea, it doesn’t mean it has any merit.
A great detective separates confirmed facts from assumptions. Build your theory around the evidence, not the other way around.
Otherwise you’ll spend the evening chasing wild geese instead of catching the murderer.
Ask the right questions
Our characters may seem eccentric, chaotic or completely unhelpful.
Don’t let that fool you.
They’re there to help move the investigation forward, but only if you ask the right questions.
Instead of asking, “Did you do it?”, try asking:
- Where were you when the murder happened?
- Who saw you last?
- Why did you argue with the victim?
- Can anyone confirm your story?
The better your questions, the better your clues.
